In 1932, the Louisiana Secretary of State granted Farmers-Merchants Bank its charter as a locally owned community bank. It is among the oldest such banks in the state.

Farmers-Merchants has always been locally owned. Almost all of the original founders, investors, and managers were born and raised in this area. The Directors have been local business owners with expertise in business and finance. Directors are required to give personally to community needs with philanthropy and public service.

Farmers-Merchants' conservative philosophy has been to personally service customers and to recommend safe investments. The bank helped Breaux Bridge area residents in the Depression and during other financial and naturals disasters affecting agriculture, the oil and gas industry, real estate, all staples of the Louisiana economy.
